Just a little bear in a big world

Small businesses can have big impact.

Startups and small businesses all over the globe are striving to build a better world.

If you’re running a mission-driven company, you know all the ways in which you’re influencing positive change:

  • Diverting waste from landfills

  • Bringing new materials and business models to the mass market

  • Pursuing sustainable innovations in manufacturing

  • Developing new ways to refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle

  • Educating consumers on responsible consumption

  • Building and supporting your local economy

  • Providing fair wages and working conditions for global communities

  • Reducing global emissions

But sustainable business is tough!

The sustainability landscape is changing rapidly and keeping up with technological advancements, policy changes, and industry trends takes time, money, and expertise. I know that those are always in short supply and it’s easy to get overwhelmed.

Big brands have more resources to tackle all the challenges that come with circular economy aspirations. They have more leverage when designing reverse logistics models. They have more access and capital for research & development on new materials. They have entire marketing teams dedicated to communicating value and ensuring brand alignment with sustainability initiatives.

But a truly sustainable world requires change on all levels, and small businesses are often the training grounds for big transformation.

That’s why I’m on a mission to support and strengthen small and medium enterprises that have dedicated themselves to protecting people, planet, AND profit. I offer a range of services that add capacity and bring sustainability-specific expertise to your organization.

I work on projects that:

  • Increase operational efficiency

  • Result in more engaged consumers

  • Pave the way for industry collaboration and alignment

  • Increase brand transparency

  • Introduce cost savings

  • Fortify an employee base that is loyal and fulfilled

PACKAGED SERVICES

Custom Zero Waste Strategies

Ideal for:

  • Mission-driven companies that are concerned with a product or product component’s end-of-life

  • Organizations interested in extending their producer responsibility

  • Emerging product-as-a-service models

  • Organizations interested in eliminating or reducing packaging waste without compromising on product safety & quality

If your company has zero or low waste goals, it’s important to find the strategy that works best for your organization’s unique needs. I’ve worked with brands on developing end-of-life strategies, waste audits, sustainable packaging solutions, and reverse logistics models. Each client and project has its own set of challenges and requirements. What works for one organization won’t necessarily work for yours. For a custom zero waste strategy that factors in your existing operational capacity, financial limitations, and brand message, I’ll work with your organization’s internal teams to map out existing systems and highlight opportunities for circular interventions. Once we’ve identified the critical areas where more sustainable solutions are feasible, I’ll dig into reverse logistic models and partner organizations that fit your needs and your budget.

Sample Process & Deliverables:

  • Internal assessment including document review & up to 5 stakeholder interviews

  • Creation of a systems map of existing processes and opportunities for intervention

  • 10 hours of research on technological innovations and environmental impact of proposed solutions

  • Development of 3 custom recommendations for more sustainable material inputs and/or processes

  • Creation of a custom, branded report for internal or external use

Industry Trends & CSR Reports

Ideal for:

  • Brands that want to be thought leaders and industry movers

  • Organizations that want to showcase how they have optimized sustainable operations internally

  • Industries and associations that are seeking support in the pre-competitive space

  • Companies that want to stay ahead of trends and customer demands

Whether you’re just starting out on your sustainability journey or are looking to level up, a thorough understanding of what your industry peers and competitors are doing is invaluable. I’ve worked with brands on conducting competitive analyses and industry benchmarking initiatives. In addition to highlighting what’s working for competitors and why, a landscape assessment sheds light on industry-wide problems that might be tackled better in collaboration. There is power in taking the initiative and stepping forward as the first mover in your industry. There is strength in numbers. There are benefits to pooling resources. In developing your industry report, I’ll interview key stakeholders both internal and external to your organization, conduct and analyze a consumer-based survey, and create a custom, comprehensive sustainability report featuring your brand’s name.

Sample Process & Deliverables:

  • 10 stakeholder interviews

  • 5 hours of industry trend research

  • Creation of custom consumer-based surveys

  • Analysis of quantitative and qualitative survey data

  • Synthesis of themes & trends

  • Recommendations for achieving short-, medium-, and long-term competitive goals

  • Creation of a custom, branded report for internal or external use

Sustainability Focused Marketing Strategies

Ideal for:

  • Mission-driven organizations seeking better customer engagement & loyalty

  • New start-ups and entrepreneurial endeavors seeking a custom marketing strategy

  • Organizations wary of greenwashing

Developing robust operations to support your sustainable business is only one part of the puzzle. Your marketing and brand materials must promote all of the amazing work your organization is doing. Finding the right words and methods of educating and engaging consumers can be tricky in an ever-changing landscape of verbiage, platforms, and consumer demands. Additionally, brands have never been at a higher risk of greenwashing. To effectively build brand reputation and customer loyalty, your marketing strategy needs to have sustainability built in, not bolted on. As a trained marketing professional and sustainability expert, I’ll work with your in-house marketing team to ensure that messaging is effective and aligned. If you don’t have an in-house marketing team, I’m happy to develop custom strategies from the ground up that are authentic and alluring.

Sample Process & Deliverables:

  • 2 hours of brainstorming and discussing objectives

  • Assessment of existing brand strategy & marketing platforms

  • Development of customer profile and customer journey map

  • Custom marketing strategy & execution timeline

  • Sample language that represents mission, vision, and values with authenticity and maximum impact

  • Creation of a custom, branded report for internal or external use

Certification Consults

Ideal for:

  • Organizations seeking B Corp Certification

  • Organizations seeking end-to-end environmental impact assessment and LCA certification

  • Organizations that have completed a certification assessment and are looking to elevate their score

If you’re ready to take the next step on your sustainability journey and pursue a certification, I’m here to help. Preparing for a certification and audit process can be rigorous work that falls out of scope for many of your full-time staff members. I’ve worked with brands on muscling through the B Impact Assessment as well as preparing for a full Life Cycle Assessment. Gathering information to complete certifications can be time consuming and frustrating. I’ve streamlined processes to create comprehensive checklists and realistic timelines for completion. Once the first assessment has been completed, I will work with you and your team to review the results, set goals, and make a plan of action for continued improvements.

Sample Process & Deliverables:

  • 2 hours of brainstorming and discussing objectives

  • 5 hours of certification research

  • Creation of comprehensive checklist and timeline for completion

  • Team support while working through the assessment and/or audit

  • Analysis of results

  • Recommendations for achieving short-, medium-, and long-term improvements

  • Creation of a custom, branded report for internal or external use
